Fox Thermal Instruments

Fox Thermal Instruments manufactures a complete line of thermal dispersion flow meters and flow switches. These include Mass flow meters, thermal dispersion flow switch which are used in Environmental monitoring, Biotechnology & Pharmaceutical manufacture, Natural gas utilities, Power generation & Processing, and other industries.

Fox Thermal Mass Gas Flowmeters Theory of Operation

  • Direct mass flow measurement of air and gases in standard volumetric units (i.e. SCFM or NM3/H) or mass units (i.e. lbs/m or kg/h)
  • No additional pressure or temperature compensation required
  • Exceptionally broad measurement range, (100 to 1 typical) including very low velocity flow rates
  • Linear 4—20 mA output proportional to mass flow rate
  • Linear 4—20 mA output for process temperature (Model FT2 only) Low pressure drop
  • No moving parts
  • Insertion and inline configurations
  • Microprocessor based, field rangeable electronics
  • Proprietary Power Pro
  • Measures flow rate and flow total

Repeatable Gas Mass Flow Measurement

Fox Thermal Flowmeters use a constant temperature differential (DT) technology to measure mass flow rate of air and gases. The thermal mass flow sensor consists of two Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTD’s). The sensor elements are constructed of a reference grade platinum wire wound around ceramic mandrels that are inserted into stainless steel or Hastelloy tubes.

The Reference RTD measures the gas temperature. The instrument electronics heat the mass flow sensor, or heated element, to a constant temperature differential (DT) above the gas temperature and measures the cooling effect of the gas flow. The electrical power required to maintain a constant temperature differential is directly proportional to the gas mass flow rate.

The microprocessor then linearizes this signal to deliver a linear 4—20 mA signal.

Power ProTM Sensor

The FOX Power ProTM Sensor operates at a higher power level than other competitive thermal technologies, providing better response time and wider turndown. Compared to a typical Different Pressure type flowmeter, as shown below, the Power Pro sensor offers better low flow or low end sensitivity. The Power Pro sensor also provides exceptional accuracy at high velocities — up to 50,000 SFPM air.

Fox FT3 Thermal Gas Flow Meter

Fox Model FT3 Meter

The Fox Model FT3 Thermal Gas Mass Flow Meter and Temperature Transmitter measures two important process variables in one rugged instrument.

The Model FT3 measures gas flow rate in standard units without the need for temperature and pressure compensation.

The CAL-V™ feature is an in-situ calibration routine that validates the flow meter's accuracy by testing the functionality of the sensor and it associated signal processing circuitry. More information.

Fox Thermal Instruments FT2

Fox Model FT2 Meter

The Fox Model FT2 Thermal Gas Mass Flow Meter and Temperature Transmitter measures two important process variables in one rugged instrument. The Model FT2 measures gas flow rate in standard units without the need for temperature and pressure compensation. The Model FT2 Inline Flow Meter is now available in 316 stainless steel or A106 Grade B Carbon steel pipe (+ A105 flanges - if ordered).  More information.
Fox Model 10A Thermal Mass Flow Meter

Fox Model 10A Meter

The Fox Model 10A Thermal Mass Flow Meter is the instrument of choice for reliable and accurate gas mass flow measurement. The instrument measures gas in standard units without the need for temperature and pressure compensation. The Model 10A Inline Flow Meter is now available in 316 stainless steel or A106 Grade B Carbon steel pipe (+ A105 flanges - if ordered). More information.

Environmental and Emissions Monitoring with Fox Thermal Gas Flow Meters

Fox Thermal Instruments' non-resetting Totalizing Fuel Flow Meters (TFFs) meet air quality management equipment requirements and provide an easy interface for emissions management systems. If your company must comply with the new regulation, 40 CFR Part 98, we are prepared to help you fast track your readiness program.

On November 8, 2010, the Final ruling on Subpart W - regarding Petroleum and Natural Gas Systems - was released. Companies that will begin reporting in 2011 will need to prepare their facilities for reporting by getting the appropriate monitoring devices. Other Subparts, such as Subpart II for Wastewater systems must also comply.  Download printable brochure on enviromental monitoring.
